Features: Oku Yamato no Kami Taira Ason Motohira was the son of Motonao and was commonly known as Kozaemon. He received the title of Yamato no Kami in Kansei 1 (1789) and died on July 15, Bunsei 9 (1826), at the age of 83.
When carving bohi, Motohira often inscribed the signature after cutting the grooves. As a result, the character "Moto" (元) frequently shows traces of having been cut after the bohi was completed. Another distinctive feature is found at the end of the tang, where one of the file marks is intentionally offset from the others. If the file mark runs directly in line with the others, the signature can generally be regarded as gimei (false signature). In addition, the tang tip characteristically bears one or two horizontal file marks. Motohira deliberately incorporated these details into the tang to discourage forgery. If these identifying features are absent, the authenticity of the signature should be questioned. These characteristics are clearly illustrated in Fujishiro's Shinto-hen, page 461.
