Features: Characteristics specific to Motohira’s appraisal include the shape of the tang. Noticeably, the tang features one or two lines at the end and a middle line that deviates slightly from the angle of the last line. If a line goes straight through the middle, it would be considered a forgery. Ensure that one or two lines are not cut off at the end of the tang.

Aoi Art’s Comment: This piece was made when Oku Yamato Kami Taira Ason Motohira was 57 years old. He passed away at the age of 83 on July 15th, 1832. His works are robust and well-crafted, often preferred by many for their thick cutting edge, which is typical for Kyushu smiths. Even if slightly rusted, they generally can be fully restored due to the minimal amount of core iron.
