Era: Around the mid Muromachi period.
Shape: A double-edged blade (moroha-zukuri), a form that was also in fashion in Bizen during the same period.
Jigane: A soft ko-itame hada in which utsuri appears.
Hamon: Suguha temper line in ko-nie deki. The boshi is slightly pointed and turns back.
Features: The Sue-Mihara is a group of swordsmiths whose lineage continues from the Kamakura period. Its early smiths are called Ko-Mihara, those of the Muromachi period are called Mihara, and those of the late Muromachi period are called Sue-Mihara.
Koshirae:
Tsuba: A suaka (pure copper) tsuba with a polished ground; the rim is bordered with shakudo.
Fuchikashira: A suaka (pure copper) ground carved with a design.
Saya: A scabbard finished with twisted brown and black.
Menuki: Carved with a carp and a human figure, decorated in gold iroe (gold coloring).
Kozuka & Kogatana: Made of bamboo.
Bashin (horse needle): Made of bamboo.
Kojiri: A design rendered in gold on an iron ground.
Aoi Art's Comment: In the era when this piece was made, double-edged tanto of this kind were in fashion.
Against the backdrop of a harsh age of continuous warfare, a blade was required to reliably inflict damage on the opponent in actual combat, and it is thought that this sharp, double-edged form was born from that need.
Gazing at this work while reflecting on the battles of those days, one is again struck by its power and functional beauty.
