Hizen Kawachi no Kami Masahiro originally signed as Musashi no Kami Masanaga, and is said to have changed his name to Masahiro in 1625. Around 1641, he received the title of Kawachi no Kami.
Unlike other Hizen smiths, he favored forging midare hamon in a nie-deki style reminiscent of the Soshu style, and he was highly valued by Nabeshima Katsushige the lard of the Saga clan. Among the so-called “Bō-Hizen” smiths, he is regarded as the most accomplished, and it is said that he also produced works on behalf of Tadahiro.
During the Edo period, the production of tanto was limited, making this a rare and valuable work. From the style of the signature, it is considered to be a work of the first generation.
