於南紀文殊重国造之

We divide works in to Saijo Saku, Jyojyo Saku, Jyo Saku,and Regular Saku.
This piece is ranked as Jyojyo Saku for Nanki Shigekuni.

Sayagaki (translation): There is a nine-character signature reading “Oite Nanki Monju Shigekuni.”
Although several generations used the same inscription, this work is presumed to be by the 4th-generation Shigekuni, active around the Kan’ei to Genroku periods.
The blade displays a workmanship characterized by suguha, which may be described as the traditional and distinctive style of the Shigekuni school.

Era: the early Edo period, late 17th century
Shape: A blade with a relatively narrow width, shallow curvature, tapering toward the tip, and a somewhat small kissaki.
Jigane: Koitame hada with partial rough texture.
Hamon: Ko-nie deki Suguha with Ko-ashi, doubled hamon.

Features:
A blade such as this, in which the width at the tip (sakihaba) is noticeably narrower in comparison to the width at the base (motohaba), reflects a style that became popular around the Genroku period. It is said that this shape was favored due to the rise of kenjutsu practice, as it was better suited for thrusting techniques.

Koshirae:
Tsuba: iIron ground, carved in openwork with windows and pine trees, decorated with gold inlay of arabesque designs.
Fuchikasrhia: a design of autumn insects and plants. Inscription: Mino Ju Mitusoki (non-guaranteed)
Saya: stringray skin
Menuki: a design of gourd or grape.
