This blade is ranked as Jyojyo Saku among the works of Oshu Ju Kunikane.
Habaki: Double gold-foiled habaki.
Blade Length: 32.27 cm (12.71 in).
Curvature: 0.45 cm (0.18 in).
Mekugi Hole: 2.
Width at Base (Motohaba): 3.10 cm (1.22 in).
Thickness of rim (Kasane): 0.51 cm (0.20 in).
Sword Weight: 280 g.
Era: Edo period, around the Jokyo era (1684).
Shape: A healthy wakizashi with a wide mihaba and thick kasane. The original cutting edge (ubu-ha) partially remains, indicating excellent preservation.
Jigane: On close examination, the characteristic masame hada of the Kunikane school is clearly visible.
Hamon: Deep nioiguchi suguha with gentle ko-ashi. The boshi is hakikake and returns in a ko-maru form.

Features: The Kunikane lineage served as the official swordsmiths of the Sendai Domain for several generations from the early Edo period onward. They are renowned for their distinctive masame hada, a tradition established by the first generation. This wakizashi was forged by the third-generation Kunikane, whose personal name was Genjiro and who was born in Kan'ei 10 (1633).

Tsuba: Mokko-shaped shakudo tsuba carved with waves and highlighted with gold iroe.
Fuchikashira: Shakudo ground decorated with shogi pieces.
Saya (Scabbard): Aogai-chirashi lacquered saya.
Menuki: Plant and bird motif.
Kozuka: Shakudo ground decorated with shogi pieces, highlighted with shakudo and gold iroe.
Including kogatana.

Historical Background: In 1684, the era name changed from Tenna to Jokyo in Japan, and the Jokyo calendar, devised by the astronomer Shibukawa Harumi, was introduced. This replaced the Chinese Senmyo calendar that had been used for approximately 800 years and marked the beginning of calendar-making based on astronomical observations conducted in Japan.
