Era: Edo period, around Kanbun era (1661–1673)
Shape: A wakizashi with standard width and thickness. The tang is ubu and unsigned.
Jigane: Well-forged itame hada.
Hamon: Nie-deki, gunome-midare. The boshi turns back in a round shape.
Features: Echizen Seki smiths were active from the late Muromachi period to the early Edo period.
Many swordsmiths including Yasutsugu were active in Echizen.
They are thought to have worked as a group, resulting in very similar styles.
Koshirae:
Tsuba: Vertically oval shakudo nanako ground with engraved cherry blossom design and gold inlay. Signature: Goto Senjo (kao).
Fuchikashira: Shakudo nanako ground with high relief carving of full-bloom cherry blossoms and a torii gate, with gold inlay.
Saya (Scabbard): Black roiro lacquer with carved pattern, with kojiri.
Menuki: High relief carving of a flower basket with gold inlay.
Kozuka: Shakudo nanako ground with high relief carving of full-bloom cherry blossoms and a torii gate, with gold inlay.
Kogatana included.
Aoi Art’s Comment: This piece appears to have been carried as part of a daisho when attending a castle.
It would have given a very splendid and brilliant impression.
A magnificent work adorned with scattered cherry blossom motifs.
