Jigane: Itame and Mokume with intense grain pattern with Jinie and intense Utsuri.
Hamon: Nioi-deki Suguha and Notare with thick Nioikuchi.
Features: The Higo Province Enju school traces its origins to Tarō Kunimura, who is traditionally said to have been a grandson of Rai Kuniyuki of Yamashiro.
From the late Kamakura period through the Nanbokuchō period, the school flourished greatly in Higo Province.
The workmanship of the Enju school generally resembles that of the Yamashiro Rai tradition; however, it is characterized by the appearance of whitish utsuri, and Hamon to appear slightly subdued.
Aoi Art’s Comment: This piece is an extremely rare example, featuring a single mekugi-ana and retaining signature and dates.
Historical Background:
Longer tantō such as this piece were commonly produced in the Nanbokuchō period.
From the mid-Nanbokuchō period onward, there is a tendency for the blade width to become even broader.
This work was made in Gentoku 4 (1332), a time of intense conflict between the Kamakura shogunate and Emperor Go-Daigo, and in the following year, 1333, the Kamakura shogunate fell.
