Shape: An ordinarily proportioned blade in both width and thickness, featuring a Bohi groove, deep curvature, and an extended boshi.
Jigane: The steel displays a beautiful itame mixed with mokume hada characteristic of the Oei period, with active chikei, producing an outstanding and attractive surface texture.
Hamon: Chikei is very active, the hamon is bright and clear, and the boshi turns into a midare pattern.
Koshirae:
Tsuba: Vertically rounded shakudo nanako ground with a high-relief design of figures, decorated with gold and silver iroe.
Fuchikashira: Shakudo nanako ground carved with a warrior design and finished with gold iroe.
Menuki: Shakudo nanako ground with a warrior design in relief carving, finished with gold iroe.
Kozuka and Kogatana: Carved with a dragon and mountain design and decorated with gold iroe.
Aoi Art’s Comment: This is a one-handed sword showing a mixture of itame and mokume hada, and is a well-made work with a bright and vivid appearance.
Historical Background: Oei (1394–1428) was the longest Japanese era name, lasting approximately 35 years during the Muromachi period, primarily under the rule of the 3rd shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu and later Ashikaga Yoshimochi.
This period marked a transition from the establishment of strong shogunal authority under Yoshimitsu to political instability following his death.
The Oei Rebellion occurred in 1399, when the powerful shugo daimyo Ouchi Yoshihiro rebelled against the Muromachi Shogunate.
