Description:
An unusually shaped tsuba of polished copper ground, decorated with a peony and lion motif executed in katakiri-bori engraving. The composition is rendered with remarkable skill, displaying the refined artistry and technical mastery for which Senju is renowned.
Additional Information:
In 1972, Yanagimura Senju, who had taught himself the art of metal carving, was selected for the Chokin (metalwork) division of the New Sword Exhibition. Seeking to further refine his skills, he later studied under Kokeguchi Senshu. Thereafter, he received consecutive awards at the New Sword Exhibition and was recognized as a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property designated by Okayama Prefecture. In 1997, he was granted Mukansa (Exempt from Judging) status by the The Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords, a distinction reflecting the exceptionally high regard for his craftsmanship and artistic achievements.
