Features:
Toward the end of the Meiji period, ownership of Japanese swords was permitted for military personnel and others, leading to recognition of swordsmiths like Gassan Sadakazu and Sugawara Kanenori as Imperial Household Artist Craftsmen (Teishitsu Gigeiin).
As expected of a Teishitsu Gigeiin, even such a small tanto has been crafted with exceptional care.
This is an unusually small piece, and it clearly shows the high quality of workmanship.
"Samuhara" (written in ancient Japanese script known as Kamiyo moji) is a protective charm script believed to ward off all forms of misfortune and adversity. It was traditionally used as a talisman, such as for protection from bullets on the battlefield. Although it is sometimes pronounced "Samahara," the more common and accepted reading is "Samuhara." Since this ancient script cannot be represented using modern kanji conversion systems, it is presented here in hiragana.
