The kozuka features a polished silver ground with gold cloisonné inlay depicting a lotus and butterfly design.
The Hirata school became highly distinguished from other schools through its unique use of a special technique called shippo (cloisonné enamel work) on kozuka and tsuba, and flourished as official artisans employed by the Tokugawa Shogunate.
