Features:
The Aoe school flourished in Bitchu Province from the Kamakura through the Nanbokucho period. Among its works, those dating up to around the mid-Kamakura period are classified as Ko-Aoe (Old Aoe).
As this blade is approximately 700 years old, some loss of material from repeated polishing is evident.
Nevertheless, it retains characteristic features of the old Aoe works, including a sugata with pronounced koshi-zori (curvature concentrated toward the base) and a low-tempered, reverse-slanting midare hamon. These features allow collectors to appreciate the distinctive character and historical charm of this ancient blade.
