He was active for approximately 50 years, from the Kyowa era through the Ansei era.
Naotane practiced the theory of reviving classical sword-making methods advocated by Masahide and was particularly skilled in the Soshu and Bizen traditions, producing numerous masterpieces. This work features a tightly forged masame (straight-grain) hada reminiscent of Go Yoshihiro. Exceptionally well executed, it demonstrates Naotane’s remarkable versatility and mastery of a wide range of techniques.
The name “Yoshitora” appearing in the inscription is thought to refer to Ino Ichiun, a spearman active during the late Edo period.
