Description:
An aoi-mokko shaped iron tsuba with a polished surface, decorated with inome openwork.
The large seppa is made of shakudo nanakoji and engraved in katakiribori style.
Additional Notes:
Hagiya Kappei, a metalworker from Hitachi Province (present-day Ibaraki Prefecture), was born in 1804 as the second son of Terakado Yoju and was later adopted by Hagiya Jinbei. His common name was Yasuke, and he became known for granting the character “Ya” from his name to his students. He studied metal engraving under Shinozaki Katsushige, a master directly descended from the Mito-kinko tradition, and in 1844 became an official engraver for the Mito domain. As one of the leading Mito metalworkers of the late Edo period, he trained many disciples, including celebrated masters such as Namekawa Sadakatsu and Unno Shomin.
