Takei Naotane was a master craftsman representing the Shin-Shin-to period. He was a student of Suishinshi Masahide and served as a domain craftsman of the Akimoto family of the Yamagata domain. He practiced the theory of restoration of the old swordsmanship advocated by his master Masahide, and was especially good at Soshu-den and Bizen-den, and left masterpieces of these styles. Naotane was active for about 50 years from Kyowa to Ansei, and this work was made when Naotane was stilll young, around 30 years old. This piece has dynamic Gunome midare Hamon called Doranba, and is an imitation of Tsuda Echizen Sukuhiro. It is rare that Naotane, who made many pieces in the old sword style, made this piece in the Shinto style. His dexterity in creating works in a variety of styles is evident.
