Tanto in Shirasaya with Koshirae (NBTHK Hozon Paper)

Signature: Mumei (unsigned) attributed as Gassan.

This sword belongs to Jyo saku ranking.
The blade was polished.
Habaki : silver single habaki.
Blade length(nagasa) : 19.8cm or 7.79 inches.
Sori : 0.0 cm or 0 inches.
Mekugi :  1
Width at the hamachi :1.95 cm or 0.76 inches.
Kasane : 0.60 cm or 0.23 inches.
Era : Early to middle Muromachi period.
Shape : The blade is rather slender and regular thickness.
Kitae : Ayasugi hada well grained with jinie
and chikei work and utsuri appear.
Hamon :Niedeki suguha. Boshi:round shape.

Special feature:Gassan is the name of one of a holy mountain
in present Yamagata pref. where had been prospered gathering ascetics,
merchants and swordsmiths from ancient times.
Swordsmiths lived at the base of Mt. Gassan formed a school
and forged swords with peculiar texture of jitetsu called Ayasugi-hada
around the Kamakura period. On and after the middle Muromachi period,
swordsmiths started to inscribe their individual swordsmith name on the sword tang.
The school once declined in the Edo period. Gassan Sadayoshi moved to Osaka
and revived the tradition in the last Edo period.
It has succeeded continuously until today.

Koshirae :
Saya :deep brown color kawarinuri saya.
Tsuba :On the syakudo nanako plate,
flowers are engraved with gold color.
Menuki :Waves are engraved by syakudo plate.
Fuchikashira: On the syakudo plate,
waved and birds are engraved with gold color.
Kojiri:On the copper plate, waves and flying birds are engraved
with gold splashes.
Kozuka: onthe syakudo plate, waves
and a dragon is engraved with gold color.

From Aoi Art: This small size Ayasugi hada hamon
with chikei is very attractive nice. Especially the typical Ayasugi hada
very clearly visible to see the texture.
The Koshirae is nice quality、 well balanced with this Tanto.  
We recommend this Tanto with Koshirae.
