Features: The Gassan school of swordsmiths originated in the Kamakura period and continued until the end of the Muromachi period. The Gassan style of forging techniques was lost during the early Edo period, but in the late Edo period, Gassan Sadakazu successfully revived these methods. While some smiths in the mid-Edo period also succeeded in recreating the Gassan-hada, the Gassan lineage continued their study of these techniques from the Muromachi era to the end of the Edo period, preserving the family name. This tanto showcases the Ayasugi-hada and Gassan-hada beautifully, making it a highly accomplished piece. It comes with a reliable certificate from Fujishiro, a respected expert who is also well-known for his polishing skills.

Aoi Art’s Comment: The Gassan school from Dewa province flourished from the Kamakura to the Muromachi period. However, by the Edo period, their techniques had almost vanished, with only a few continuing the tradition. In the late Edo period, Gassan swordsmiths thoroughly studied and revived the techniques of the old Gassan-hada, and these methods are still passed down today.
