Special feature: The Shimosaka school began in the late Muromachi period (Azuchi-Momoyama period) and became one of the prominent swordsmith groups representing the Shinto (new swords) era through the Edo period. "Shimosaka" refers to the birthplace of this group of swordsmiths, which is present-day Shimosaka-sho in Sakata District, Omi Province (now Shimosaka-naka and Shimosaka-hama in Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture).
