Features: Sumitani Masamine (real name Yoichiro) was a swordsmith born in 1921 in Matto City, Ishikawa Prefecture. After graduating from Ritsumeikan University in 1941, he joined the Ritsumeikan Nihonto Tanren Kenkyujo, where he trained under Sakurai Masayuki. Later, he established his own forge, Sanryutei, in his hometown of Matto, producing numerous works. He received many awards, including the Masamune Prize, and was designated a Living National Treasure in 1981. He passed away in 1998 at the age of 77. Masamine specialized in the choji-midare hamon, and this work is a stunning example, reflecting the elegance of the Kamakura Ichimonji style hamon and the beauty of the jigane.
