Shape:A wide and robust naginata.
It is rare to see both the front and back inscriptions with such a long signature.
Jigane (Steel Surface):A well-forged, fine ko-itame hada with excellent quality.
This work was crafted by Shimada Ju Minamoto Yoshisuke in August of Kanbun 9 (1670).
Hamon (Temper Pattern):A well-defined midare hamon with nie-deki and hitatsura-style hardening.
The hamon is solid and well-formed.
Features:Yoshisuke belongs to a prestigious swordsmith lineage that continued from the Muromachi period to the 9th generation in the Edo period (Genbun era).
This piece is by the 5th generation Yoshisuke.
Aoi Art’s Comment:A work by a Suruga swordsmith, who was also skilled in the Soshu tradition.
This naginata has a powerful and solid structure, making it a magnificent piece.
The signature is clearly inscribed, and the presence of an additional inscription on the back adds to its value. The koshirae is coveerd th a cloth.
